Our Story

Empty greenhouse with wooden benches, pots, gardening tools, and an air conditioning unit
Indoor greenhouse with wooden shelves filled with various potted plants, including ferns, succulents, and tropical foliage, illuminated by natural light through a curved glass roof.

Stem and Sound™ grew out of the discovery of a forgotten 20-year-old greenhouse in West Seattle and a life long love affair of plants — a space with good bones, deep roots, and a lot of life left in it.

What began as a restoration project quickly became a calling: to bring the greenhouse back to life and create a place where plants, care, and community could thrive again.

Rooted in West Seattle™ and shaped by the Puget Sound, our brand draws inspiration from the Puget Sound waters and the orcas that move through them — symbols of connection, resilience, and balance within an ecosystem.

In the same way orcas rely on healthy, interconnected social environments, we believe plants also thrive when they’re cared for thoughtfully and with intention.

Our Founder

Evan has been surrounded by plants for as long as he can remember. A lifelong plant lover, he has a natural eye for design and a passion for creating spaces that feel alive, inviting, and authentic.

Whether arranging plants in a home, curating a thriving greenhouse, or learning new growing methods Evan believes that plants are more than decoration — they’re a way to bring warmth, balance, community, and personality to any space.

Evan brings a little Southern charm to the lush landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. A recent transplant hailing from Oklahoma, he now considers West Seattle home.

Greenhouse FAQ

Is your greenhouse open to the public?

Not at this time. Our West Seattle greenhouse is a working grow space used to cultivate and care for plants for our shop, design projects, events, and installations.

What is the greenhouse used for?

Our greenhouse is where many of our plants are grown, acclimated, and cared for before heading into homes, offices, events, and commercial spaces. It allows us to ensure plant quality, health, and longevity — especially for custom design work.

Can I visit the greenhouse?

The greenhouse is not open for daily public visits. However, we occasionally host private appointments, pop-ups, or special events by invitation or announcement. Follow us on social media or join our mailing list for updates.

Can I purchase plants grown in the greenhouse?

Yes. Plants grown or cared for in our greenhouse are available through:

  • Our retail offerings

  • Design projects

  • Events and pop-ups

  • Corporate and commercial installations

Availability varies seasonally.

Do you design spaces using greenhouse-grown plants?

Absolutely. We specialize in sourcing, growing, and designing plants specifically for each space — from homes and offices to events and commercial interiors.

Why keep the greenhouse private?

Maintaining a private greenhouse allows us to focus on plant health, quality control, and thoughtful design work while keeping the space sustainable and operational.

Will the greenhouse ever open to the public?

Possibly — but thoughtfully. Any future public access would be through curated events, workshops, or pop-ups rather than daily retail hours.
